I would like to introduce you to three book series that I am enjoying with my kids in mind. All are for the older child, as they have intense lessons and dangerous adventure.
The Hall of the Dragon King is a trilogy that follows the life of a young boy monk all the way up to his king-hood, he wasn’t looking for adventure but found it in loads. It has lovely description and detail about this world of knights and ladies. Characters are enjoyable and lovable… unless they are meant to be unlovable, and it is intense! Page turner.
The Guardians of Ga’hoole, this series about owls had me at the promise of, well, owls… I have an affection for this animal. The movie was good and so are the books. Compared to in the Hall of the Dragon King this is an easier series to read, for the kids, as it is spread out into smaller volumes. There are, however, a lot more books to get through…I have tracked down 17 so far. Vivid description of these wonderful animals and adorably enjoyable characters will fill your pages… till you get to the bad guys… then you meet owls that will make you shiver…
Oh Redwall, delightful Redwall, it has plenty of swashbuckling and adventure but treads more on the sweeter side of life. It doesn’t have that edgy tense feel all the way through that the other two series have. This may make it less of a page turner but more of an enjoyable read. You want to mosey through it most of the time, enjoying the delightful lives that the sweet animals live. The battles get you tearing up the pages but most of the time your mind will be more at ease with this read. I wish I always had a Redwall book in my handbag, which is more then possible since this is a long series!
As you can tell I greatly enjoy the swashbuckling adventure type books. I come by it honestly being introduced to adventure at a young age. I wasn’t even in junior high when I had began devouring Edgar Rice Burroughs books. What I dislike is making a mistake and picking up a book or series that is completely not to my taste. I would love to hear your recommendations and ideas of what fresh book series or author(s) I could or should try next, please share!
