Sentimental and Practical

Sentimental? Yes, my family had an old record player and a varied collection of records. I think we all enjoyed listening to it well into our teen years! I am a romantic and so I love old things and record players have been on my mind since I saw the beautifully packaged new records at my local book store… ‘I can get (enter fav new artist here) on vinyl!!’ Vinyl Cafe is a family fav radio show in our house and… well… for many sentimental reason’s spotting that rack of new vinyls sparked a vinyl on the brain week.

Now, how can I make this practical??

Well of course it is practical to own something that suits my decor! Since I have a traditional and off kilter old fashioned in my own way living room of course I can’t have a stereo or i-pod station! It simple wouldn’t go! I would have to cover it, shamefully, with a doily as I have with my husbands electric piano. I must go with my decor and get a record player!

Who am I trying to convince? Well my husband of course (enter big grin and eyelash flutter here).

Lightning Love

Baby Boy’s Lightning McQueen looks like he got a new paint job! He was pretty banged up from love earlier this week and now look at that shine!

Well, Baby Boy took his favorite car everywhere he went and one day he didn’t return home with him. After two days of my two year old’s sad song we got him a new car and a buddy, Mater! Who can listen to ‘Where my Libning McBeen? I liiiiiiike Libning…’ for longer really! Baby Boy isn’t into a lot of toys, all he really enjoys is spity noises while he drives his Lightning McQueen around so if I have to make this little car reappear a few times in Baby Boys life time I will.

Pull Them Up

Little Woman gets very perturbed if I don’t allow her the time she needs to pull her socks all the way up.

Pull your socks up,
wear them with pride,
look em in the eye and declare,
‘I wear my socks up high!’

Celtic Princess

A Bit Of Me

Honestly, I love to blog, I love to write. As a child I wrote constantly and through high school and college I lost touch with it, other then my constant journaling. When I discovered blogging I rediscovered a great joy of mine! I feel like I get my own brain space when I escape motherly duties long enough to type away. Sometimes I find a picture like the one above and want terribly to tell you something related to it. Often the story or interesting connection comes and other times I am left sitting and contemplating what to write for lengths of time… either way I love the game…. the playful mind game that is writing, grabbing the lightning fast thoughts and pining them down with pen to paper or finger tips to keys.

A Bit Of Her

The photo is, of course, of my sweet third born child, Little Woman, so enough about me…

My little Celtic princess:) Your pet name turns to lassie as I pull this dress over your head. I like buttoning up its field flower buttons, tying its big ribbon at the back and flaring out the big warm skirt for you. I can’t help but do your hair in the ‘princess style’ that I did for years on your older sister, specifically when she wore this same garb. You always smile big for me when I put it on and even though it isn’t your favorite (that would be the pink one with strawberries on it… interestingly enough also your sisters favorite at this age) you humor me and wear this dress often. I think you enjoy how warm it is this time of year and you are wise… you enjoy the joy I take in it, on you.

A bright Celtic princess still abides in my house.
My bonny lassie, my little lady,
in her dress dancing and prancing about.
She’s pretty and sweet and thoughtfully strong.
In the hearts of mine and her daddy’s, forever is never too long.
Dear lassie, remain always this way for me.

Biscuit Love

Always have to double the biscuit recipes with my growing family but it is all good, kinda like doubling the love:)

Yes that is a harmonica and a biscuit by my baby boy’s supper bowl. He has been singing since he learned to talk and any little instrument he can get his hands on he loves and uses incessantly. The harmonica is a symbol of my hopes for him. The biscuit is a symbol of my love for him.

I strongly believe a child’s potential is boosted, and hopes become realities, with love. Biscuit love is that extra love. The kind of love that puts a mommy out just a little bit more but generally seems to have great effect. I could just serve them up soup, goodness knows I often do because that is all I can muster, but if I find the time to do a little extra in the way of biscuits or other quick breads to eat with the soup or stew I always see extra results. It is hard to give a little more, do the extra, when there is so much pulling at a mommy’s mind and time, but I guess that is why it is called extra and why it is so special for the kids and for me.

More biscuits please:)

AND for those days when you just can’t do extra, do what you can do in love and be at peace with that… Paul couldn’t do much in jail now could he, or could he?? He wrote this while in prison:

“(Verse 2) Be anxious for nothing (verse 6) Let your mind dwell on what is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, of good repute, excellent and worthy of praise (verse 8) and I can do all things through Him who strengthen me (verse 13)”

(psssst, thanks for the verses mom)

Christmas Milk

A delightful and quiet evening with just the kids, the dog and us at home.
A cute cartoon for them to enjoy,
A big blanket for all four kids, and the dog, to share snuggles under.
A special intermission of ‘Christmas milk and gingersnaps’.
A collection of Christmas milk mustaches for mommy to clean off before the movie starts again.
A sweet child of mine exclaiming ‘as soon as we finish this Christmas milk we must get more!’

I just adore that they call Eggnog ‘Christmas milk’ and hope it is our families own little name for it for years to come.

Remember

Everyone wants to be remembered. Those who give for others often will not ask for it but lets remember them all the more.

Today I attended a special ceremony, at the kids elementary school, for ‘Remembrance Day’. My oldest sang in the choir and she did wonderfully. As usual I barely held myself together. I can’t help but be moved by so many emotions at such a ceremony.

I was so thankful I was able to include my youngest too this year. It wasn’t easy for them to be still and quiet. At one point, when the trumpeter was performing, my two year old started to loudly play along with his ‘mouth trumpet’ and I decided to not bat an eye… he settled as soon as the music was done and the fact is his precious little heart and free spirit is a perfect example of some of what the soldiers fought and fight for…and why we so thankfully remember them today and tomorrow.

Cupcake Socks and Smiles

My little woman never seems to have a matching pair of socks on. Can’t be bothered usually I suppose… BUT last Saturday she asked me to dress her up for her afternoon date with Daddy and then she went and found her ‘cupcake socks’. Not only are they her favorite pair, not only does she value them as her ‘good pair’ but they matched! I like to think she took the time to match her socks just for Daddy. I made sure to whisper to him as they where leaving ‘mention the cupcake socks’ and she beamed with joy when he did.

It was an afternoon made for my girl, involving tea and talking! He asked her what she wanted to do and she wanted to have tea with him. She insisted ‘not the cold tea, the hot tea!’ she is big now you know so no more cold tea! Such a lady she always explains if it is really hot she will need a spoon to sip it but if it is just warm she is fine with out. They sat on the patio and chatted, well she chatted, endlessly.

When she returned home she had the biggest smile. I was shown her wonderful ‘teacup to go’ and the smile continued long after the tea was gone. This smile was for Daddy.

My girl truly values a listening ear and adores time with her Daddy. I am so glad to see Daddy appreciates one on one time with each of his little ones… and me… well I can’t get over her cupcake socks, too cute!TTFN
