Little Women!

A collection of fine lady friends of mine went out to a musical theatrical production of LITTLE WOMEN! We brought our little women along (those 5 and older) who could sit still!

Getting ready was a bit tricky. My daughter is a newly declared tomboy so at first she could only worry and go on about what her buddy Max would think about her dressed up. I convinced her to glam up by letting her borrow a pair of my grandmothers earrings… this was the first time I have let her wear earrings in public so she was convinced! I wasn’t at all surprised that she loved JO in the play. “She is rough and fun Mama.” she explained on our way home.

I caught up with two lady friends and their girls at a little restaurant for dinner first! My girl was thrilled to try her first ‘Shirley Temple’. The little girls spent as much time dancing around the table as eating. It was lovely to see my girl with old pals from our home town.

The production was so well written and fun that it was positively captivating! The time flew for me! Plenty of tears came when Beth died… mostly the mom’s where crying… and when it was over… well my friend said it best when she expressed the desire to break out in song at the right moments in life after watching such a well done musical!

I was thrilled to see my eldest daughter’s eyes where glued to the stage the whole time. When it ended she couldn’t stop talking about how much fun it must be to be the actors and we had to go have a closer look at the stage and set. What a wonderful Christmas event! I hope to do this again with my daughter and eventually with my younger daughter as well!

Cookie Delivery!

Little Woman loves to help me in the kitchen. I decided to make her holiday extra special and let her prepare and deliver some treats for friends. She made a list of people she wanted to bless and my three year old and I whipped up some ‘old school’ shortbread. It is a Scottish shortbread with barley flour so it has a caramel kinda nutty taste twist… some ended up over cooked but it is the thought… right?

Anyhow, we had great fun wrapping them in plastic wrap and tying them up with Christmas yarn. Delivering was even more fun. She insisted on holding the packages and handing them over with a big ‘MERRY CHRISTMAS’! Priceless stuff! Little Woman almost made it to the end of our delivery route but I ended up handing over the last bag while she napped. It was such lovely fun we will have to do it again next year.

On the way home a little voice asked from the back seat ‘Mama, can we do dishes when we get home?’ OH MY, a girl after my own heart!

(Here’s my girl helping with dishes! She is such a big help!)

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

(Here she is crashed under the Christmas tree, she worked so hard today!)

And So We Wait For Christmas

It is Christmas in the heart that puts Christmas in the air. ~W.T. Ellis
Let Christmas not become a thing
Merely of merchant’s trafficking,
Of tinsel, bell and holly wreath
And surface pleasure, but beneath
The childish glamour, let us find
Nourishment for soul and mind.
Let us follow kinder ways
Through our teeming human maze,
And help the age of peace to come
From a Dreamer’s martyrdom.
~Madeline Morse

P.S. The kids are having a hard time understanding how long this waiting will last and I didn’t feel inspired by the chocolate boxed advent calendars I saw when shopping… looking for something we can use every year so it has some tradition to it… any ideas where we could find something?

Craft Day!

I am not a craft person. Not enough patience or good ideas and I am overwhelmed when ever I try to find all the stuff needed to do crafts, BUT once a year I find I end up having a good time doing them with the kids. We always seem to make something around Christmas. The ideas we come up with are pretty humble but we all have a good time. Last year we made angels out of yarn, for the tree, and a silver angel, out of a cereal box and some wrapping paper, for the top of the tree… This year we have three plans and they have kept us busy most of the day.
Garlands of snowmen, gingerbread people and snowflakes for the kitchen (CHECK)
Wreath out of some of the many pine cones collected off of our drive way (COMING SOON)
Decorate all the brown wrapped gifts ( COMING SOON)
The house is a disaster on craft day. All the chores get forgotten as we become wrapped up in our creations (another reason I don’t do this a lot). But today the paper clippings can keep building up on the floor and the dishes can wait for we are having a family adventure!

(Here we all are, still in our pj’s… breakfast clutter not yet removed from the table, we where all so eager to get started!)

Decoration Day!

And then we decorated the house! This is our second year with a tree and we all agreed we really like our iddy bitty tree a lot. The kids and I worked hard at decorating it and Little Woman put the star on top. I am particularly proud of our star. Our tartan star gets my Scottish pride worked right up, he he he…
Big Girl was amazed at all the Christmas STUFF we had when I started unpacking it. Big Boy was very impressed when he saw decorations he had made through the years and very happy with me when we put them on the tree.

We started the evening with a lovely supper, Christmas music playing in the background, watched Elf while we decorated the house and even managed to get our family photo taken for our Christmas card… to be sent out soon! There wasn’t to much crying and screaming… who am I kidding, I think there was more then last year!

Once the kids where in bed my man and I had a more relaxing time. We had tea and bree cheese with dried cranberries, bananas and spicy almonds. Ahhhh it still sounds good this morning!
As usually my mind is full of little romantic moments I want to have with my family this Christmas season! I hope to find the time to capture some fuzzy Christmas memories, fuzzy moments in time, and put them in a bottle for the cold months of winter that follow the holidays!

His Bamboo Chair

(Baby Boy managed to find a bowl and spoon, he immediately ran to his favorite chair and pretended to eat contently for about an hour. This is where he escapes to when he has something he isn’t supposed to have and enjoys alone time with his spoils.)

I sure have to watch you when you climb up your favorite chair. A couple times you have tried to kill my plant that is on the side table next to the chair… if you find a fork you like to dig in the poor plants soil… and the other day you climbed up on the table again. Usually you climb up the chair and sit there like a gentleman but every now and then you venture to the couches side table… and do a little jig, momentarily because Mom moves pretty quick when I see you on there! Last week you managed to climb on undetected (you have gotten pretty quiet since you realised your crazy hyper giggles give you away). I was laying on the couch next to the table and looked up just in time to see your big grin and body fly over my head and into my out stretched arms. Guess you wanted to body slam Mommy… I wasn’t really impressed!

OUR Lights!

I had been pleading with my husband for years to let me get Christmas lights. I love the cheery light on the short days of winter and wanted to have my own to plug in each night. We had finally gotten one little string of lights for our Waldheim home and then we moved… and forgot them there…

Well it must be official! We must be in our own home again because we put up lights! We have graduated from one little string to four! I am so happy every night I plug them in! I hope to get one string each year and keep adding to them. It was a family event putting them up. I had a wonderful helper in ‘Big Boy’. He handed me the clips and helped me unwrap the lights but most importantly he held the ladder for me (except when he took the below picture.). Holding the ladder and chatting with me turned out to be very important because I discovered I don’t like being on ladders at all! I was pretty shaky getting down again. It is so funny how we change when we grow old. I remember climbing up and swinging on ladders as a child… we used to play ‘dare devil’ and jump from fence to ladder to roof tops as kids!
The pretty star lights are to ‘Little Woman’s credit. She insist we get them! Such a grand helper she was as we found a few affordable strings of lights.

When Daddy plugged them in for the first time all the children where on the couch watching out our big window. They clapped (even Baby Boy) and a chorus of ‘Ooooh’ and ‘Aaaah’ rang out. There is no snow here yet and it seems so strange!! So for now we decided with shorter days the cheery lights where needed… might as well get them up while the weather is still mild! But the inside will probably wait for a bit! I am not looking forward to removing ‘Baby Boy’ from the Christmas tree constantly…

Counting It A Big Blessing!

I find at a young age all children posses the heart of a helper and if parents calm down enough about perfection the child learns how to be good at helping. I am learning to be this parent.

Big Girl used to play ‘Cinderella’ when she was little. I would give her a damp cloth and she would, well, smudge everything in her path but with an earnest heart and desire to help Mommy. Big Boy was my little tidy up ‘Prince Charming’ and still is. He loves helping Mommy clean up the clutter in no time at all.

Little Woman is now entering that stage and partly because she like to feel like a minny mom. For the last couple weeks she has insisted on drying the dishes. I was very nervous about it at first and tried to deter her but, as many of you may no, three year olds are amazingly susceptible to ‘reverse psychology’ so this back fired for me.

Turns out she is quick, very careful and dedicated! I thought the fun would wear off right away but she is still drawn to me like a magnet when the sink starts filling up with suds and hot water! I clearly see one reason she really enjoys this is because she has me pinned down and can talk my ear off. I often get a little tired and just start doing the ‘uh hu‘, ‘oh yah‘, ‘yes dear’ but more often I really enjoy listening to her describe her crazy ‘Little Woman world’.

And please don’t offer to help! Oh she gets mad if I suggest she not worry about the last few dishes or try to dry them for her! And Mommy better get out of the way when it is time to wipe down the sinks at the end, this too is HER JOB! Truth is, if you can’t already tell, I appreciate the help GREATLY and adore the company while washing the dishes. It has made this miserable job something to look forward to!

I can count my blessings! I have been hoping for a dish washer and while I haven’t gotten that yet the Lord sent me company, conversation and a loving littler helper to make my burden lighter:)

Unconditionally I Wove My Little Woman!

Not so long ago, when Baby Boy first arrived I remember having to remind Little Woman that I wanted to give her love’n. When ever she would get upset with life and act out I would say ‘Just let me know when you need some love!’ and she would reply ‘I need some wove Mama.’ and then we would hug… well I think it is paying off. She seems to have a simple yet complex understanding of our love…

L.W.–“You wove me when I cry’n, wight Mama?”
MOM–“Yes, when you are happy I love you and when you are sad I love you!”
L.W–“You wove me when I gumpy, wight Mama?”
MOM–“Yes, when you are silly I love you and when you are mad I love you!”
L.W.–” Yup you wove me when I in the tub too!”
MOM–“Ha ha ha, Yes I love you when you are clean and when you are messy!”
L.W.–“When you wove me Mama?”
MOM–“I love my Little Woman always!”
L.W.–“Yup.”

Our conversation while she was having her bath today.

Market Mall

I love Market Mall. It is one of the first indoor malls in our city and it has friendliness and community galore, unlike the big flashy malls that are way more popular. It was the perfect place for Big Girl and I to have our first real shopping night together.

We went out to find her something she would really enjoy (and something that she go to pick out all her own) because she has always had hand-me-downs and never has experienced picking things herself. We also went to find Mommy a black sweater… can you believe that is the only color sweater I didn’t have??

We hit ‘hangers’ and spent lots of time picking and trying things on. We really got into a groove in the change rooms and between trips down our imaginary cat walk we both found what we where looking for. We also found a new ability we both have, to help one another shop with honesty and understanding of our very different tastes! It brought back memories of times like that with my mom and so I was very very happy about our trip. We stopped for a root beer and a latte and even found the time to look at some books (Big Girl is so into reading all of a sudden!!!).

This trip was really important to me. I needed to have some honest conversation with my eldest daughter. We go out alone so rarely and I have felt the distance between us lately. She wants to be more cool then cute and is so interested in teens that she hasn’t appreciate my preaching about embracing her childhood as long as she can. After some fun we where able to really talk and I told her how I miss her and I don’t want her to pull away from me. She agreed she doesn’t want that either (phew, big mama sigh!!). I get teary thinking about our perfect evening out because I have so much love and pride wrapped up in that girl and I dream that she will appreciate and value me as much as I did and do my own mother.

I feel like such a winner when I am with Big Girl!
