A Little Pretty

Found an in town outlet of one of my daughters favorite stores. They had lovely prices and I was able to get ten hair pieces for ten dollars. TICKLED! I made an effort to pick things that I would enjoy using as well as my daughters. A touch of vintage in some of these pieces and I am happy with them:)

The Curlers

These three dainty little photographs of my teeny tiny four year old tug at my heart. She is so sweet and pretty and full of joy in them.

When I put them in she was thrilled and apparently thought the curlers where the hair style itself. “I look beautiful!” she exclaimed as the last curler when in.

“Oh honey you leave them in till your hair is dry and then you take them out so you can see the curls.” I explained.

She looked at me very seriously and responded “Oh.” I could tell she was a little disappointed at the idea of removing the strikingly red curlers… “They match my dress.” she said.

All was saved when I suggested a little photo shoot while they where still in. I have to admit, I suggested this partially to cheer her up but also for my own pleasure. I couldn’t get over how cute she looked with all her hair up in curlers. In the end she took them out too soon and her hair was full of body but not curly… and yet that didn’t matter to me. We had such fun together doing this and she was so sweet in the curlers the result didn’t matter. I know for sure we will try this again, since she is such an agreeable little patron.

(I have to point out my dear four year olds cheeks! She has always had the sweetest and plumpest cheeks.)

New Tea Party Recruits

(Yes they drink their tea by the tea spoon full, not very refined, but I will take what I can get if it will get more tea partiers in my corner!)

I am pleased to announce on a particularly miserable day near the end of February I was able to finally convince my two little men to tea party with me.

Coconut sugar sweetened rooibos tea with an abundance of cream was served with crackers and melted cheese on top. By simply melting the cheese upon the crackers I also convinced my two year old to finally eat cheese and crackers! A grand day of victories. Amidst a blustery blizzard-y day I shared food, drink and sweetly calm conversation with two of the sweetest little men I know.

Here’s to tea time with the boys!

Grow Old With Me

Love in suffering proves it is a genuine love. The above picture is of my parents. Aren’t they just the sweetest couple? Their life together has been real. They have each suffered and sacrificed to be and stay together. A crazy love by today’s standard of love only when it is pleasant and provides pleasure for self. I examined some crazy love today… at the doctors office.I was sitting in an incredibly uncomfortable gray chair. This chair was all the more uncomfortable when 4:15 went by… my appointment time had been 3:15. To my right, up against the wall and right near the nursing station sat the first couple… they where very advanced in years. A nurse shouts out her name and the wife slowly got up with her walker then started toward the nurse. Her husband was have a real struggle getting up even with the aid of his walker. She stopped dead without looking back and asked him if he needed her. He looked a little embarrassed as she abandoned her walker and slowly came back to help. She smiled at him as she helped him up and they walked out of the room, her in the lead, both heavily relying on their walkers.

Another older couple enters the clinic. Both take off their shoes and the wife took her husbands hand for a momentary squeeze, let go and whispered, ‘Can you see me?’ He nodded yes and she started to walk away. She turned to check on him and said ‘Still see me? Follow me to a chair,’ then reached out, touched his arm and let go again. He followed, struggling not to run into people seated around him. When they finally found seats next to one another they where behind me. I glanced back and noted the comfort they found in being together, it was written all over their posture

The third older couple sat right across from me. He looked at her hand and gruffly said ‘it looks better today’. She smiled and agreed. He then in an even more gruff tone remarked ‘I will stay here when you are called.’ She asks him why? ‘I haven’t a clue what this appointment is all about or what is going on.” “Well, (she huffed) you shan’t learn a thing by sitting out here.” He huffed back and looked at his shoes “even so I am not coming.” She looked at him for a moment, with no signs of offense and told him that was alright. She knew something about him I didn’t… he wasn’t just grumpy and she knew that and so she let him be.This people watching episode had me weepy. I was thinking about my man, how it is going to be hard for each of us to go the distance but I so long to be old and grumpy with him and him alone. I hope we are a cute couple then, playfully grumpy mostly, helpful and still tenderly affectionate… and… I really hope he remembers me, ha ha ha, his memory is already poor.

Snow Family

Daddy is on the far left with the little round snow hat. Next is myself (the mommy) and then little Baby Boy in front, Eldest Damsel behind him, Big Boy next with Little Woman right near by and Riddick the dog in front.

It was a remarkably lovely February day with a little falling snow and higher temperatures. My crew took advantage and where very busy for hours. They only came in once soaked through. With great enthusiasm they insisted I come out to meet their snow family before they retired to the house for good.

(My adorable eldest son, petting the snow dog.)

Our Friday was very busy with a dance and movie birthday bash for Eldest Damsel and Sunday is showing signs of not being so restful, honestly as it so often is, so we had a simple day at home today… snoozing, playing in the yard, trip to the toboggan hill, warm baths, much snacking and cozy cups of tea. Saturday was my lovely day of rest this week.

Keep Warm:)

(My Baby Boy and his cousin, mesmerized by the record snow fall we got this year!)

I have been running all week, break neck speed, to get all my errands done and now I am happy to awake to a -40 kinda day so I can stay home, guiltless! There is an endless list of things I need to do at home today…

  1. Timtams waiting to be filled with coffee and then devoured.
  2. Strong coffee waiting to be perked on the stove.
  3. Bread dough rising and waiting to eventually be baked and eaten.
  4. Endless laundry baskets full of clothing waiting to be folded.
  5. A cinderella story movie waiting to be watched by my babies and I for the first time.
  6. A couple books waiting to be read just before I fall asleep on the couch come nap time.
  7. All this done while I enjoy my kids, enjoying the company of my dog, enjoy my home and make a real effort to look at the bright side of winter, it makes you more appreciative warm places with people you love.

Blessings to you all on this winter-y day. May you find things to smile about and be warm enough that when you smile your lips do not freeze to your teeth!

P.S. It is supposed to warm up soon I hear! Perhaps even later today!!

A Pick Me Up For Little Woman

Little Woman adores dogs… always has had this drive to take care of and fuss over animals…that is why it is so upsetting for her, and me, when one snaps at her. We ran into the snappy little dog in a store today… I warned her to give it space but… she was so crushed and a bit scared when the little dog got mad at her approach. I hugged her and the owner punished the dog and yet she cried all the way to the van.

When we got to the van I decided to take her in to the grocery to have a look around and work out those tears. When she stopped at the flower section and kept smelling all the different plants I saw her smile return. Perhaps it was the joy she took in the pretty flowers or the pleasure smelling them gave her… this could have been even more of an effect on me since I have no sense of smell… but the potted daffodils fate to come home with us was a sealed deal when she told me ‘I would take such very good care of the baby flowers.’

The little pot of strong and young plants was on sale so I was smiling as we payed for them. The little girl holding them, carefully and firmly, in her grasp was smiling because she had something to mother. This was a perfect little pick me up for Little Woman, it is totally a need of hers to be helpful, important and even domestically motherly.

Gorgeous Rest (six)

I sat with a cup of tea, reading. My youngest two sat on the floor playing calmly.

With great joy exclaimed aloud Little Woman popped up like a jack in the box and ran for the window. A large flock of birds had taken flight. Wee little birds where they, and adorable, as they danced around the berries on our neighbors tree. Baby Boy soon followed her, stunned a bit, as I was, by her interruption of our afternoon repose. Pointing, ooohs and aaahs followed the interruption. As the birds settled my babies drew their attention to the hoarfrost that had coated everything outside. Little Woman saw so many shapes in the frost and wanted to tell me about them all. On went the chatter until she was distracted by her hands and Baby Boy by his toy car. They slid down the couch and again embraced the idea of a repose. I returned to my tea and thought about how I would record this lovely moment because it was, in fact, just so lovely!

Repose, temporary rest from activity, excitement, or exertion. This is the way my afternoons often are, just before the oldest two burst in the door from school and shatter any hopes of such a quiet atmosphere reoccurring until well after bed time. As a new mom I found all the repose hard to take at times but with four children of varied ages I now cherish it and realise it is temporary oh so temporary. I want to enjoy it enough that I am not desperately disappointed when it is shattered too quickly for my taste. I want to savor repose and not waste a moment.

I am keenly aware of the value in still times, quiet times, times of rest today and so I am very thankful for repose. It is a gift in a hectic world to be at rest. Thank you Jesus for times of rest in my life! May I always make use of them.

Arm Warmers…That Little Accessory

This has almost becoming a yearly tradition… (check out related link RIGHT HERE) Two years ago I put leggings top of my list of little accessory to hunt down… Got em… Last year I set my sights on the adorably old fashioned caplet… Up until about a week ago I had nada and had almost just shrugged it off. So much more exciting when the item falls in your lap… last minute yet (just before the year was up)… and because of someone else being thoughtful! My s.i.l. surprised me with a gift! A hand made white caplet!
As I wear it around the house and enjoy how quaint it is and unlike all the others I have looked at over the year I wonder about… well… arm warmers… yup! There is such a thing, and they are terribly cute!

Not all arm warmers are created equal! I like the ones with thumbs… knitted or crochet ones are always sweet but if they have buttons and lace I can’t help but be drawn in no matter the material… Hmmmm… arm warmers…TTFN

Sentimental and Practical

Sentimental? Yes, my family had an old record player and a varied collection of records. I think we all enjoyed listening to it well into our teen years! I am a romantic and so I love old things and record players have been on my mind since I saw the beautifully packaged new records at my local book store… ‘I can get (enter fav new artist here) on vinyl!!’ Vinyl Cafe is a family fav radio show in our house and… well… for many sentimental reason’s spotting that rack of new vinyls sparked a vinyl on the brain week.

Now, how can I make this practical??

Well of course it is practical to own something that suits my decor! Since I have a traditional and off kilter old fashioned in my own way living room of course I can’t have a stereo or i-pod station! It simple wouldn’t go! I would have to cover it, shamefully, with a doily as I have with my husbands electric piano. I must go with my decor and get a record player!

Who am I trying to convince? Well my husband of course (enter big grin and eyelash flutter here).
