Catching Fairies

My big girl and little woman looked very sweet today as they ran around on the lawn. They had a whimsy dance to each step as they ran after ‘fairies’. They where blowing the dandy lion seeds and then trying to catch them. It was a sweet little moment of pure childhood imagination and fun. I am not totally sure why Little Woman had her ballet skirt on her head but it added to it all. While they lived in the moment I couldn’t help but think about school starting on Monday… I had new runners, backpacks and other supplies on my mind… This mom knows all to well how sudden summer will come to an end… Ah it is all so sweet, summer holidays that is, when you are a child.

Looking for Seeds and Not Just the Weeds

(My boy having a good look at the camp scenery and also his first taste of real freedom from Mom and Dad!)

It was good for Big Girl that I let her experience a week away at camp first, she is the oldest after all but I am glad that Big Boy has also gotten to have his first week away this year. He could hardly sleep the night before sports camp and was the perfect helper in the morning. He practically loaded all his stuff and his three siblings into the van with out my help. We got there early and so he got first pick of the beds! A big deal in the world of camp!

Almost the moment he was gone I was thinking about what a wonderful boy he is (in a haze of mama mush and heart sick loneliness with one fewer child around). You could say I was seeing him in a rose colored light and could only think of how lovely he is as a helper around the house and what a gentleman he is when we go out together.

While I know none of my children are perfect, and wouldn’t want to place the weight of such a silly notion on there little shoulders, I think it is so healthy for a mommy to think about the qualities growing in their children’s souls. It is important to look for and be thankful for the seeds of love and quality sprouting in their hearts. With kiddo chaos easy to find and troubles ready to spring up like weeds daily it can be really hard to remember each child is a special little gift from God. Instead it becomes all to easy to see them as a herd of animals out to get their parents.

Thank you Jesus for each of my babies and may they grow in you and for you!

Bean in a Bag

Big Girl brought home a little sprout at the end of the school year, a little sprout in a bag. We watched the roots form and watered it daily (just a little). As the vine grew it became clear we had a bean in a bag. Today Big Girl and I both squealed when we found A VEGETABLE! The bean plant that could DID! It had a bean! Yes had, for it only lasted long enough to get a picture then it was popped into Big Girls mouth. “Mmmmm, fresh!” she said. He he he, you can’t get much fresher then that!TTFN

Nothing! The Best Kind of Summer Plans In My Book!

I’ve decided I need to live some where else. I need shorter winters! Longer summers! Not hotter summers, just longer!

Summers are too short here (especially when it turns into a rainy season like this year) and I put to much pressure on myself to live life to the full! I feel like I should get it all done because I can do so little come winter… and I miss the kinda summer days I actually love… lazy days at the lake, lazy park days, lazy days puttering in my yard.

(Our last trip to the lake… ahhhh wish I was there again already!)

Forget the house! That messy house will wait for me and will be all I get to look at and work at all winter! For me, puttering at home, in my yard is the best! I could work on my yard with great joy all day and then play hard with the kids afterwards as a sweet and true reward. Forget big suppers. Come summer I forget that I even kinda like to cook…Eating a lazy supper of raw veggies and yet another sandwich is the perfect conclusion for me.Yesterday my eldest son and I weed whacked part of the back alley lawn BY HAND! We snipped and racked for almost two hours and the monstrous pile was proof of our victory, even thought there is plenty more work back there for another day. He is such great work company. He sets his mind on the task at hand, doesn’t complain or talk my ear off. We just bent our backs and worked side by side till the sweat poured. We went in for a cool drink and then ran through the sprinkler till we where beyond wet. Sitting in the sun I closed my eyes and told myself to remembered this is summer to me…If only I could convince my mind to stop finding things that need to be done and if only being done didn’t mean taking me away from my little house!

Rock Climbing

I can’t decide if she faced a giant or not!

My girl has many things she is too cautious about. I wonder if it is being the first born that will often make her very standoffish and mistrusting? She has many things that get her easily worked up and even afraid and so way back we started encouraging her to fan the flame of the areas in life she was brave about.

Like every little woman, she is braver then she thinks.

When she started standing up in class (randomly) and sharing songs and poems she had written we knew she had a spark of bravery and thankfully she is now in a fine arts school where she is encouraged in those areas.

When she was almost two she started climbing everything in sight. She could shimmy up her bunk bed no problem and started sleeping on the top at a very young age. She worked on the monkey bars, starting in kindergarten, so determinedly that she had callouses and raw patches on her hands and had to be forced to take a few days off of them to let the raw spots heal.Yesterday night was family adventure night. We had ice cream and burgers then watched Big Girl try something she has been dreaming about for a while, rock climbing! Lynn Hill has entered into conversation a lot lately. Check the link to her blog, she is a well known climber and my girl thinks she is pretty great. Well Big Girl got a little bit of a taste of Lynn’s world last night and she LIKED IT! It was wonderful to see her impressed with her own abilities and not holding back but getting up there.

(The other three sat at the bottom JUST MESMERIZED!
Baby Boy kept pointing and saying ‘Uh Oh!’)

Big Girl Becomes Spring Bean

I feel like it is time to give my four new nicknames. They have changed and grown so much I want my blog pet names to reflect that. I plan to put a little post to each as an introduction to their new pet name.

Spring Bean

She is getting so tall, so slim we can’t help but look at her and call her spring bean.
(All three pictures are of my oldest two playing their invented version of hockey.)

You are strong.
You are determined.
You are unique.
You are artistic.
You have your own style.
You are brave.
You are beautiful.

You are growing up and changing and all for the best.
May you continue to work at patience and embrace being young while you are.
May you be a little girl while you are a little girl.
If you can do this you will grow in grace, joy, peace and true beauty.

A Little Sporty

Big Boy had a great soccer season. We even managed to squeeze in a tournament the weekend of our vow renewal! He played hard this year and we could tell he was really liking it and feeling like it was HIS THING. He gets the soccer bug now. When the snow started to melt and I took him to sign up I remember he talked about it almost daily after that. I heard him telling a neighborhood pal “I am on an actual team. I got a soccer team!” So nice for him to have this to enjoy each spring.

(Check out the below pictures of my oldest messing around on the side lines at her brothers game!)

So I may actually have a sport convert on my hands! Well her style of sport anyhow… Big Girl used to scream at every soccer practice when she was on a team “TAKE ME HOME! I HATE SOCCER!” Pretty clear! Well we don’t have a big extra curricular budget in this family so when the school started a free skipping club I was thrilled she wanted to join. They learned tricks and stunt and I think something clicked in my girl! Sports aren’t just soccer, hockey or basketball! You can do skipping, baton and gymnastics, rock climbing! Well these are the sports she is insisting she needs to get involved in now. Being 8 she is now old enough to really work on her mom and dad, wheeling and dealing. I have no idea if we will put her in any or if we can but I love to see her finding her own place in the SPORTY side of life.

BUT if she does one more cartwheel in the house I will flip my lid! She kicked her brother in the face the other day, causing a bloody lip, when doing one of her flips.TTFN

Pedicures for My Girls

(See the heart? Cute!)

Seed was planted when I read a fellow blogger’s post about her girls playing SPA. Memory was triggered by my sister asking if I wanted to get a pedi done with her. I realised I had bought a pedi set a while back to share with my girls and hadn’t broke it in yet!
Last night was the night! Big Boy was at his grandparents, Baby Boy was stuck to Daddy (shadowing him all over the house) so Big Girl and Little Woman and I had a spa night!

It is a lot of work, by the way! Basins filled with warm water for the minty foot soak and all the other supplies to gather up, spa music selected and put on for mood, girl-y magazines to add to the feel and I felt ready to pamper them.

They soaked for 15 minutes and then I used a sea salt scrub thingy on their feet, but they where so ticklish it was a short scrub. Enjoyed the laughter though!

Once their feet where pretty and clean I set up the nail station. Nails where trimmed and cleaned.
Choosing color for their toes was by far their favorite part!

When it was all done their little toes looked so cute together! Big Girl went with a pattern of the blue and pink and Little Woman just wanted blue.

Waiting for the paint to dry was worth it! Once finished Daddy said they smelled like mint-y cake. They couldn’t help smelling their feet off and on for the rest of the evening. “Mmmmm, my feet smell like pizza.” insisted Little Woman, she says everything smells like pizza lately.

Spa night worked out great! They where quiet and relaxed the whole time (other then the giggling out bursts during the sea salt scrub) and it really mellowed them out for the rest of the night.

Busy fussing with them, my toes remain unpainted and I do not have clean soft feet that smell like mint-y cake… BUT my spa treatment was to put the crew to bed and sit down to a cup of tea, some treats just for Mommy and a post card from my oldest sister to read. All in all a lovely girls night!

Thankful For

I get tired of picking up after this bunch but the other day I saw it through a set of fresh eyes. Grams looked at the collection of dirty socks at my basement door and smiled. She thought it was cute! Cute that they shed their dirty little socks on my kitchen floor the moment they get home! Well she reminded me that once day I will miss the little mess of socks and the little feet that left them there… I am thankful for the socks at the top of the stairs because I am indeed thankful for each little person who contributed to the mess!

Be Brave!

Stand tall! Be brave!

My little woman knows what she is capable off and doesn’t allow Mommy to help if she doesn’t need it. I respect that about her!

She inspires me!

This spring I am going on two trips, YES TWO! With out the kids and even without my man! The first is only days away! A mothers day weekend away with my sister! We have many lovely plans, all revolving around relaxing! Then at the end of the month I have a friends wedding to go to and will travel by train.

I have had plenty of ‘looking forward too’ kinda years where you just imagine while you embrace reality. The reality was babies and pregnancies but life keeps changing!

For many years I thought perhaps I might just be a boring person, used to mundane and happy with the simple life… then I realized I am being content and not boring… patient, which is healthy for a mom, and although I love the little things I can really enjoy bigger more adventurous things in life too! I will be happy to awake the adventure loving woman once again once it is right for me and my family!

WELL this could be the right time!

Stepping out like this is big for me! I am feeling braver about it all as the days go by. I haven’t done anything like this since I was single and in college! I think it will be great for the kids to see Mommy embracing adventure in life instead of fear:)
